The great nightly Waymo honk-a-thon, in which the company’s robotaxis erupted in a chorus of horn honking in a San Francisco lot at night’s end — was resolved and then not. Now it’s back.
The backstory is that software engineer Sophia Tung setup a livestream to capture the robotaxis streaming into the parking lot to park – and honk – for up to an hr around 4 am.
Waymo released a software update last week to prevent robotaxis from honking at each other. The livestream recorded more honking at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning.
According to an interview between Tung and Waymo’s Director of Product and Operation Vishay Nihalani, conducted on Monday via her livestream, a new patch has been released. Nihalani explained the group honking, which is a result of unintentional honking.
