ElevenLabs is a startup that develops AI-powered tools for creating and editing synthetic voices. It has made its Reader application available in 32 languages around the world.
The app was first released in the U.S. in June, and then in the U.K., Canada and Australia. It allows users to upload any text, such as articles, PDF documents, or e-books, and listen to them in different languages. Reader now supports languages such as Portuguese, Spanish, French Hindi, German Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Italian Tamil and Swedish.
ElevenLabs is a unicorn that raised $80 million in funding from investors including Andreessen Hoowitz. The company provides an API for companies to use, such as text-to-speech or dubbing. The company powers voice interaction on the rabbit r1 as well as text to speech features on AI powered search engine Perplexity as well as audio platforms Pocket FM. The Reader app is the company’s first consumer-facing product.
The startup announced that it has added hundreds new voices to its library, which are suitable for different languages. Last month, the company licensed voices from actors like Judy Garland and James Dean for the app.
ElevenLabs has announced that the new language support is powered from its Turbo version 2.5, released last month. This model purports to reduce the latency and improve the quality of text-to speech conversion.
The Reader app is not the only one that lets users listen to content. Mozilla’s Pocket , The New York Times Audm-based Audio app and owned by Mozilla also allow users to listen to content.
ElevenLabs announced that it would add new features to the app such as offline support, and the ability share audio snippets.
