A newly discovered bug causes iPhones to crash briefly. The bug can be triggered by just four characters.

A security researcher discovered on Wednesday that typing “”:: could cause the Apple mobile interface, called Springboard to crash.

TechCrunch confirmed that typing those characters into the Search bar of the Settings app will crash Springboard, as well if you swipe to the right and type them in the App Library search box.

have noted that all you need is “”: or any other character. Springboard crashes briefly when you trigger the bug, and then reloads your lock screen. In other tests, the bug caused the screen to go black for a moment.

Apple has not commented when contacted.

Researchers tell TechCrunch that the bug doesn’t appear to be a serious security issue.

“It is not a bug,” said Ryan Stortz. He’s an iOS security researcher. Patrick Wardle, a researcher who specializes in iOS and and founded the security startup DoubleYou agreed.

The bug is not triggered by anyone other than the iOS device owner manually entering the characters. This is unlike , a bug that was introduced in 2020 and crashed the Twitter app for any user who viewed a tweet that contained a specific set of characters.
