Procreate vows never to incorporate generative AI into its products

Procreate, a popular iPad design app, has come out against generative AI and promised never to add generative AI features to its products. The company stated on its site that although machine learning has “a lot of merit,” generative AI’s current path is not right for its platform.

Procreate continues to state that it is not chasing technology that threatens human creativity, despite the fact that this may make Procreate “seem like they are at risk of being left out.”

James Cuda, CEO of Procreate, released a stronger statement against this technology in a video posted to X on Monday.

Cuda said, “I really f ****** HATE generative AI” in the video. “I don’t agree with what’s happening to the industry and I don’t like how it affects artists. We won’t be introducing any generative AI to our products. Our products are always developed and designed with the idea that someone will be creating something.”

Digital artists have praised the company’s stance online. Many are unhappy with how other digital art and illustrations apps have embraced technology.

After receiving backlash from its users in 2022, the illustration app Clip Studio paint has retracted its plans to release as an image generator.

Adobe, the company with the most popular design suite, has integrated a number of generative AI features in its products. Adobe was also criticized after its terms of service were updated to suggest that it would use users’ content to train AI models. Later, the company had to confirm that it does not train AI models using customers’ content.

It’s interesting to watch a popular app stand out in a world where digital art platforms are embracing AI. It will be interesting to watch if other companies follow Procreate’s lead, given that the announcement has been met with praise from designers and artists.

“We don’t know exactly where this story will go, how it will end.” Cuda said, “We believe we’re on a good path by supporting human creativity.”
